Overview

The BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard is the premium tier of the co-branded Porter Airlines credit card, issued by BMO Bank of Montreal on the Mastercard World Elite network. It launched alongside the base VIPorter Mastercard in March 2025 and carries a $199 CAD annual fee waived in the first year. The card earns VIPorter points at 3x on Porter Airlines purchases, 2x on gas, dining, and groceries, and 1x everywhere else. It automatically grants cardholders VIPorter Horizon status — the tier above the Avid Traveller status on the base card — from approximately two days after approval, for as long as the card is held. A minimum individual income of $80,000 CAD or household income of $150,000 CAD is required.

Who this card is for

This card is for regular Porter Airlines travellers who qualify for the World Elite tier and fly frequently enough to want Horizon-level status benefits without earning them through flights. VIPorter Horizon status unlocks a higher tier of priority travel benefits versus the Avid Traveller status on the base card. If you travel on Porter several times a year through Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Ottawa, Halifax, or Porter's expanding routes and want both accelerated point earning and premium status perks, this card is built for you.

Key benefits

The 3x earn rate on Porter Airlines purchases accelerates point accumulation for frequent flyers. At 2x on gas, dining, and groceries, the card also earns solidly on everyday Canadian spending categories. VIPorter points are redeemable for Porter flights and partner redemptions.

VIPorter Horizon status activates within approximately two days of card approval and includes all Avid Traveller benefits plus higher-tier priority privileges on Porter flights. This is one of very few Canadian co-branded airline cards that grants automatic status from day one — without requiring any qualifying flights.

The welcome offer for new cardholders includes up to $2,400 in value, comprising a significant VIPorter points bonus and a round-trip companion pass — one of the more substantial airline card welcome packages currently available in Canada. Applications must be received by October 31, 2026 to be eligible for the current promotional offer.

Comprehensive travel insurance is included, as expected at the World Elite level: emergency medical, trip cancellation and interruption, delayed and lost baggage, and car rental collision damage waiver.

Potential drawbacks

The $199 CAD annual fee is meaningful. After the first-year waiver, you'll need consistent Porter flying and solid everyday spending to justify it. VIPorter's route network, while growing, is primarily Eastern Canada and select US markets — if most of your flying is on Air Canada, WestJet, or international carriers, the points currency has limited reach. The World Elite income requirement ($80,000 CAD individual or $150,000 CAD household) also narrows the eligible pool.

How it compares

The RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard carries a $139 CAD annual fee, earns WestJet dollars on all purchases, and includes an annual companion voucher — well-suited for WestJet flyers across Canada. WestJet has a broader domestic route network than Porter, which matters if you travel to Western Canada or smaller markets. For Porter-specific travellers in Eastern Canada, the VIPorter World Elite's Horizon status perk is a stronger loyalty proposition than WestJet's companion voucher.

Bottom line

A strong card for qualifying Porter loyalists who fly the airline multiple times a year. Horizon status from day one is a rare and practical benefit. The companion pass in the welcome offer adds immediate value — verify the current offer at bmo.com or flyporter.com before applying.
