Overview

The American Express Platinum is American Express Canada's flagship charge card — a $799 CAD annual fee product built squarely around premium travel. It earns Membership Rewards (MR) points, one of the most flexible reward currencies in Canada, with transfer partners that include Aeroplan, Marriott Bonvoy, and several other programs. If your benchmark for a credit card is lounge access, concierge service, and a stack of annual credits that can offset a chunk of that fee, this is the card designed to deliver that experience.

Who this card is for

This card fits frequent travellers — ideally those flying several times a year who will realistically use airport lounges and book through travel portals to capture the annual credits. There's no stated personal income requirement from Amex, but you're most likely to come out ahead if you're spending at least $30,000 to $40,000 CAD per year on the card and travelling internationally at least a few times annually. If your life has you in airports four or more times a year, the lounges alone shift the value equation considerably. It's also worth noting this is a charge card, not a credit card — your balance is due in full each month.

Key benefits

The standout perk is unlimited Centurion Lounge access globally — and Centurion access stays unlimited going forward. Starting January 1, 2027, Plaza Premium and Priority Pass lounges default to six complimentary visits per year unless you spend $20,000 CAD or more annually on the card, in which case those networks also remain unlimited. If you're a frequent enough flyer to consistently hit that spend threshold, the full lounge value holds; if not, plan around the Plaza Premium and Priority Pass cap while keeping unlimited Centurion use.

The card includes $200 CAD in annual travel credits and $200 CAD in annual dining credits, which together partially offset the fee. On the earn side: 2 MR points per $1 on eligible dining and food delivery in Canada, 2 MR points per $1 on eligible travel purchases, and 1 MR point per $1 on everything else.

Welcome bonus offers have historically been generous — often in the range of 80,000 to 100,000+ MR points, sometimes with a second tranche in year two. Check the current offer on the Amex Canada site before applying.

Additional perks include hotel status benefits with Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors, Fine Hotels + Resorts access, and a comprehensive travel insurance package.

Potential drawbacks

The $799 CAD fee is the obvious one — it's the highest annual fee among consumer Amex cards in Canada. Amex acceptance is also meaningfully lower than Visa or Mastercard in Canada; smaller retailers, Costco, and some rural merchants won't take it. If you're earning primarily at 1x on everyday non-travel spend and not using the credits or lounges, the math stops working quickly. There are no foreign transaction fees, which is a genuine plus for international travel.

How it compares

The American Express Gold Rewards Card offers a similar MR earning structure at a fraction of the cost ($250 CAD), making it the natural starting point before stepping up. If you want premium Aeroplan-linked travel benefits with Visa acceptance — which matters at Costco and more broadly across Canada — the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege at $599 CAD is worth considering, particularly if Air Canada status is a priority for you.

Bottom line

A strong option for high-frequency travellers who will genuinely use both the lounge access and the annual credits. If you're not in an airport regularly or won't max out the $200 + $200 CAD credits each year, the $799 fee is hard to justify against the alternatives.
