American Express Business Edge Card Details
Overview
The American Express Business Edge was Amex's entry-level business credit card for Canadian small business owners, earning Select Membership Rewards (MR-S) points at 3x on office supplies, electronics, gas, transit, rideshares, dining, and drinks, and 1x on everything else. Issued by American Express at $99 CAD annually, it was designed as an accessible business rewards card for owners who didn't need premium travel perks but wanted meaningful points on common business categories. MR-S points earn at the same rate as MR points on the Cobalt but can only be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors — not Aeroplan.
Availability note (April 2026): American Express closed the Business Edge to new applications on August 27, 2024. Existing cardholders can continue to use the card and earn points normally. If you are looking to apply today, this card is no longer available to new applicants.
Who this card is for
This card was a strong fit for self-employed professionals and small business owners who spent heavily on office supplies, tech, client meals, and transportation — the common daily expenses of running a business. At $99 CAD, the fee was accessible for early-stage businesses. The absence of Aeroplan transfer capability was the main limitation for travel-focused business owners, making it better suited to cardholders who could use Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors points, or who redeemed through the Amex travel portal.
Key benefits
The 3x earn rate covered eight purchase categories that routinely appear on small business expense reports: office supplies, electronics, gas, public transportation, rideshares, taxis, dining, and drinks, up to $25,000 CAD in spending per year. For a business spending $2,000 CAD per month across those categories, that's 6,000 MR-S points per month, or 72,000 points per year before hitting the cap.
A promotional 10x rate for the first six months on eligible categories was historically offered for new cardmembers. No pre-set spending limit was included, giving business owners flexibility during higher-spend periods.
Potential drawbacks
MR-S points couldn't be transferred to Aeroplan, limiting usefulness for Canadian business travellers who primarily fly Air Canada. After the $25,000 annual cap in bonus categories, spending drops to 1x, which is below average for a $99 card. Amex acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard, adding friction for vendor payments.
How it compares
With the Business Edge no longer available to new applicants, the American Express Gold Business or American Express Platinum Business are now the primary Amex business card options in Canada. The Gold Business earns 3x on Air Canada purchases and 2x on hotels and car rentals at a $250 CAD fee — more expensive but with MR points transferable to Aeroplan.
Bottom line
A capable entry-level business card that's no longer open to new applicants. If you hold it, keep it — the ongoing earn rates and no-preset-spending-limit structure remain valuable for existing cardholders. New applicants should look at the Amex Gold Business or consider business cards from other issuers.
